There are several different options for Easter Bread. Different countries have different traditions, some of which include sweet breads. The bread is likely braided in three strands in order to represent the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Greek Tsoureki, even incorporates eggs dyed red to represent the blood of Jesus. Whether or not one is religious, Easter bread is a beautiful addition to any holiday table.

To create an Easter Bread, follow these steps using your own bread recipe:

  • You can use any recipe you like to create a centerpiece-worthy loaf of Easter bread.
  • After preparing your dough, simply separate it into three equal pieces.
  • Roll the dough into thick strands.
  • Place each piece lengthwise on a prepared surface and begin braiding them together.
  • Secure the ends and tuck them under.
  • Next, tuck decorated eggs into the loaf (eating the eggs later is not recommended). If you prefer, you can shape the braid into a circle, and place eggs into the open center after baking.

For common bread recipes, brush the bread with egg wash or wait until about 10-15 minutes before it is done and then brush it with melted butter. Either of these will help ensure a beautiful crust. Try not to get any egg wash or butter on the Easter eggs. The dye might run on your bread.

You can use any color Easter eggs you like. Serving the bread in a shallow basket lined with fabric that matches the color of your eggs is a good look. Fiestaware creates colourful tableware that will add a festive spring touch to your table. Another option is to add ribbon to the basket, or if making a circular loaf, place a ribbon where the ends meet.
