Simple Snacks: It is easy to over-do super sugary sweets during winter holidays. Healthy snacks that are equally delicious with less sugar can serve as a needed pick me up for friends or family. Homemade granola, popcorn balls, and spiced, roasted nuts are great for this. If doing nuts, try using an assortment of pecans, almonds, and walnuts. Cashews also work. You can heat the nuts in a skillet with a bit of oil or coat them lightly in oil and roast them in the oven. After roasting, toss the nuts in some cinnamon and just enough brown sugar to taste.

Crafty Mixes: For those who love to bake you can prepare cake or waffle mixes and place them in a pouch or mason jar, using new recipes that your loved one has yet to try out. For an added touch, you can attach the recipe, written or printed neatly, to the packaged mix. Thus, allowing the recipient to make the recipe again at a later date. Mixes also work well for those with little time on their hands for cooking. You could, for example, make a homemade instant oatmeal mix, using oats, instant milk, sugar, and spices. You could even add raisins or cocoa. This would be great for your recipient to have handy after Christmas, when they are too tired from festivities to make a large breakfast, or are back into their work schedule and pressed for time.

Homemade Extracts: If you are unsure of what treat to make for a specific recipient, you can always make your own extract for flavoring treats at a later time. This is nice, as almost everyone uses flavor extracts for baking at some point, and they have a relatively long shelf life. Popular choices for extracts are vanilla, almond, and peppermint. However, you can get really creative and use flavor like coconut, anise, lemon peel, and licorice.
