Whether you just bought nonstick pots or pans or you're about to, there are several things you need to know so you can keep them like new.

Don't Clean Them in the Dishwasher or With a Scouring Pad

Many nonstick pots and pans claim to be dishwasher safe, but in reality, the harsh dishwasher detergents often cause the finish to wear off over time. It is better to wash them by hand with a dishrag (or non-metallic brush or sponge), liquid dish soap, and hot water. Never use a scouring pad as it can wear off the finish just like a dishwasher.

Don't Cook Over High Heat

Usually nonstick cookware is meant to be used over low and medium heat. If the heat is too high, the finish will eventually wear down or warp. For best results, be sure to follow the manufacturer's heating instructions.

Don't Use Metal Knives, Spatulas, Spoons, Tongs, or Whisks

When it comes to nonstick cookware, it is best not to use  any type of metal utensils to stir, scrape, blend, or turn food. Instead, use plastic, silicone, or wood utensils.

Don't Use Nonstick Cooking Spray

There is no need to use cooking spray on cookware that is already nonstick. If you do, eventually a sticky buildup of the spray will occur that will not burn off while cooking. If this happens, it will take a lot of scrubbing to remove the substance. Using butter or oil will not cause any problems.

Don't Fail to Season Your Pots and Pans

If you want your pots and pans to last longer as well as improve the way foods cook in them, it is best to preseason and re-season your cookware. To do this, rinse and dry your pots and pans, then rub a teaspoon of oil (any type of cooking oil will do) around the inside. You can re-season by using a small dab of oil before each use.

Don't Cut Pizza With a Pizza Cutter

If you use a nonstick pizza pan, remove the baked product onto a wooden cutting board before using a pizza cutter.

Don't Immerse in Water Before Cooling

Nonstick cookware should always be completely cooled before being set in lukewarm or hot dishwater. If you choose not to wait, you could end up with warped  pots and pans that will no longer have even heat distribution causing a reduction in performance.

Don't Store Pots and Pans Improperly

Always make sure to store your nonstick cook and bakeware so they carefully nest. Do not store them with metal objects such as metal pan covers that have sharp edges. For best results, put a dish towel between them or use a hanging rack.

Don't Use Bread Pans for Meats or Food High in Acid

Nonstick bread pans are wonderful for removing bread with no effort. This makes it tempting to use them to cook food such as meatloaf. While this may seem like a great idea, in actuality, this practice will wear off the finish faster, making them harder to clean and more prone to forming rust.

Don't Store Foods in Nonstick Cookware

While it is convenient to leave leftovers in nonstick cookware, it is not a good idea. Put the food in proper storage containers in order to prolong the lifespan of your pots and pans.
