The poached egg has been around a long time, but for certain reasons there are people who avoid this method:

  • People who are generally squeamish about eggs and get a shiver up their spine when they see the white "floaties” in the poaching water. Ew!
  • People who associate poached eggs with white-haired ladies and soggy toast.
  • People who think you need special pans or electrical appliances in order to cook poached eggs and they just don’t have space in their kitchens to store a lot of stuff.
  • People who have an aversion to the taste of vinegar with their eggs (an ingredient in the traditional poaching method).

If you fall into one of these categories, stop right here and allow yourself to discover a new way to poach eggs:

Fusionbrands Silicone Poach Pods

These lily pad-like pods are a bright, modern and easy-to-clean-and-store tool for poaching eggs. They come in blue, orange, purple, pink, green or in stainless steel. They are nonstick, heat resistant to 675 degrees F, FDA compliant and safe to use in your dishwasher or microwave.

And because the poaching water never touches the egg, soggy toast is a thing of the past. No floaties. We promise!

SAY HELLO TO A HEALTHIER BREAKFAST

Eggs are inexpensive and high in protein. The bad reputation eggs had in earlier, cholesterol-phobic times is a thing of the past (see this Washington Post article).

In addition, because the poaching of eggs requires no butter or oil, it is a low fat—heck—no-fat way to cook your eggs.

Now, what you do to the egg after that is your business. Hello Eggs Benedict!

SIMPLICITY IS A WONDERFUL THING

When we say it’s simple to poach an egg using a Poach Pod, how simple is it, exactly?

Simple as this: Bring a pot of water to a boil, then crack an egg and slide it into the Poach Pod. Float the pod in the water and leave in until the egg white is set, about 4 to 5 minutes. If you like a firmer egg, leave it in longer. Take the pod out of the water and pop the pod inside out. Slide the egg on your plate. Put the pod in the dishwasher and you’re done.

Not sure that poached eggs are your favorite thing? We at Cilantro Cooks would like to convince you otherwise.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner… there’s a poached egg recipe that is healthy, delicious, and simple to prepare.

This video shows you how simple it is to poach an egg with these poachers:

BREAKFAST

Up-dated PEOT (poached egg on toast)

Ingredients: an egg, a slice of whole grain toast, ½ ripe avocado, a few snippings of fresh basil, a shake (or sliver) of parmesan and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

Instructions: Smash the avocado on your toast. Prepare your poached egg in your pod. Slide the egg on the avo, and add salt and pepper. Garnish with parmesan and basil. Snarf.

LUNCH

Croque Madame

We’re betting this sandwich of Gallic origin (open-faced version) will provoke an ooh-là-là from you.

Ingredients: For each sandwich you’ll need one slice of your favorite bread, béchamel sauce (good recipe here), a slice or two of ham, grated gruyère (or swiss) cheese, poached egg.

Instructions: Broil bread lightly on both sides. Prepare béchamel sauce. Spread sauce over bread and top with ham and cheese. While eggs are poaching, broil the sandwich until the cheese starts to bubble. Slide your perfectly poached egg on top, add a bit of S & P and serve.

DINNER

Frederico Fellini said, “Life is a combination of magic and pasta.”

At Cilantro Cooks we couldn't agree more, which is why we absolutely had to include a pasta recipe.

Four P’s Pasta

The four P’s are: poached egg, pesto, parsley and parmesan.

Ingredients: pasta (we like angel hair for this version), prepared pesto, grated parmesan, chopped parsley, one egg per plate. If you want to make pesto from scratch, here’s a good recipe.

Instructions: Cook pasta according to directions. Toss with pesto to taste. Put pasta in a bowl and make a small nest for the poached egg. Sprinkle parmesan and parsley on top. Yum!

Here’s a thought—for added delight from this recipe, make your pasta from scratch, using our Marcato Atlas Pasta Machine. That’ll have you, your family, and friends singing your praises, probably in Italian!
