Cooking can be so intimidating, especially when you are trying to impress that special someone. However, it is possible to impress your valentine with some tasty dishes that are perfect for a beginning cook. Everyone has to start somewhere right?

Keep in mind that you can make your recipes as simple or complex as you want. It's the thought that counts! Here are some Valentine's Day recipes for everyone:

Appetizers

Need some simple ideas for finger food? Make sandwiches of various types such as turkey and provolone cheese, ham and cheddar cheese, etc. Take cookie cutters to cut shapes out of the sandwiches, for example, since it's Valentine's Day, use hearts of different sizes.

Use cherry tomatoes or other red garnishes to jazz up the plate.

Heart Shaped SandwichesEntrees

Some of the easiest entrees for someone new to cooking might involve using a slow-cooker/crock pot. They can be purchased for a minimal cost at most stores, also since many people have them, you might be able to borrow one. If you enjoy using it, maybe you'll decide to buy one.

Slow-cookers are wonderful for beginners because they are so easy. Most recipes are just a matter of adding the right amount of the various ingredients and then turning the cooker on. Keep in mind that these recipes can take 4+ hours to cook, so plan ahead!

One of the most basic recipes calls for placing two frozen chicken breasts in the crockpot, add one can of chicken broth or cream of chicken soup, and two cups of slow cook rice. If necessary add a cup of water so that the liquid covers the contents in the pot. Cook on low for approximately 6 hours. Add a package of mixed vegetables, do not stir the crock pot, and make sure to cover it afterwards. After half an hour, turn off and serve. You know have a yummy and healthy chicken, veggie, and rice meal.

Want to add more? When you add the mixed vegetables, you can take the packages of rolls that come in the tubes from the store. Add these raw biscuits to the mixture after adding the mixed vegetables. Cover and cook for 30-45 minutes. Make sure to check to see the biscuits are done. Now you have a chicken and biscuit meal.

Desserts

For desserts there are many options. Below you will find several suggestions of varying difficulty.

You can go very simple with strawberries and whipped cream or chocolate covered strawberries. A fruit salad of red fruits would be cute and definitely themed well for V-day. Consider adding unpeeled apple slices, watermelon, red grapes, strawberries, and raspberries. (This could also be used with yogurt or milk to make a smoothie!)

Maybe he or she is a fan of ice cream? You could get all the fixings for an awesome Valentine's Day themed ice cream sundae. Get vanilla, cherry, or strawberry ice cream (maybe all of the above?), pink and red sprinkles, cherries, whipped cream, hot fudge, strawberry syrup, chopped nuts, etc. It only takes a few minutes to compile a delicious cool treat.

Feel the urge to do some baking? Here are some simple cookie ideas to consider:

  1. No-bake cookies - they are very simple, quick to make, and hard to 'mess up'. True to their name, they require no actual baking. Just follow these basic instructions: In a medium saucepan, combine 1 3/4 cups of sugar, 1/2 cup of milk, 1/2 cup of butter, and 4 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa. Bring to a boil, and cook for 1 1/2 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in 1/2 cup of peanut butter, 3 cups of quick-cooking oats, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto wax paper. Let cool until hardened.
  2. Sugar Cookies - These are very simple recipes, you can use cookie cutters to make them heart shaped. Then you can frost or decorate the cookies.
  3. Chocolate Chip Cookies - These can be a bit trickier than sugar cookies, but most people enjoy them. Try this recipe!
