Sometimes on TV or in magazines you see the popular dishes at restaurants advertised. For the most part you might recognize the name of the special dish, sometimes you might not. Here's a little look at a not so well known treat called Shawarma.
What is...Shawarma? Excellent question. Shawarma is a Middle Eastern meat dish consisting of meat placed on a spit to slow roast. The meats typically include veal, lamb, turkey, chicken, beef, or any combination of said meats. The meat is slow grilled for up to a day.
Additionally at times additional ingredients may be added to the spit to increase flavor. Ingredients added may include tomatoes, lemons, or seasonings. What is or isn't added can vary based on the restaurant or the person cooking it!
When being served the outer layers are shaved off for consumption while the remaining meat is left on the spit to stay warm. It can be served as the meat shavings with vegetables or other side dishes.
However, Shawarma also refers to a sandwich or wrap made with the Shawarma meat. The sandwiches and wraps can be made out of various types of breads, but the most commonly used ones include taboon bread and fattoush. Inside the wrap, in addition to the meat of course, one can often find hummus, pickled turnips, or amba.
Does this dish sound familiar? It is very similar to the popular Greek Gyros or the doner kebab from Turkey.
How can you make this delicious dish at home?
It is actually very simple to make your own rendition of Shawarma. All you need to do take the meat(s) of choice and either slow grill them, cook them in a slow cooker, or roast them in the oven.
You can season the meat however you wish but most recipes call for these ingredients:
- Pinch of cayenne
